On July 17, 2013, Queen Elizabeth II offered her “royal assent” to a bill legalizing same-sex wedding in England and Wales. The Scottish Parliament passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in February 2014 while Northern Ireland’s legislature in April 2014 voted down a measure that would have legalized same-sex marriage.
The brand new legislation in England and Wales, that was a concern for British Prime Minister and Conservative Party frontrunner David Cameron, permitted gay and lesbian partners to marry starting March 29, 2014.
